Getting Ready to Leave for South Africa

A dozen students, alumni and friends of United Theological Seminary will soon be heading to the Western Cape of South Africa. In addition to figuring out what we need to pack, many of us are cramming to read and watch the required pre-trip books and movies. This advance material will help us in-country when we examine the interrelationships between two catastrophes of the modern era in South Africa: Apartheid and HIV/AIDS.

Books:

  • Musa Dube, The HIV&AIDS Bible (University of Scranton Press, 2008)
  • John de Gruchy, The Church Struggle in South Africa (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1972, 1997)
  • Michael Lapsley, Michael Redeeming the Past: My Journey from Freedom Fighter to Healer (Maryknoll: Orbis Books, 2012)
  • Alan Paton, Cry, the Beloved Country (New York: Scribner, 2003)
  • Jonny Steinberg, Siswe’s Test: A Young Man’s Journey Through Africa’s AIDS Epidemic (New York: Simon and Schuster, 2008)
  • Desmond Tutu, No Future Without Forgiveness (Image, 2000)
  • Kevin Winge, Never Give Up: Vignettes from Sub-Saharan Africa in the Age of AIDS (Minneapolis: Syren Book Company, 2006)

Movies:

  • Beat the Drum (2003)
  • Bigger Than Barbie (2006)
  • Cry, the Beloved Country (1995)
  • In My Country (2004)
  • Mandela: Son of Africa, Father of a Nation (1996)
  • Pandemic: Facing AIDS (2003)
  • Tsotsi (2005)

  1. Just a quick note to let you all know that you have been on my mind and in my prayers the past few days as you have been running last minute errands and finalizing last minute preparations for your departure. I wish you all safe travels and a trip that leaves you forever changed in ways both expected and unexpected. Blessings on each and every one of you.

    Peace.

  2. Kim and I are safely here and doing great. We are headed to bed, we will be up in 5 hours to go participate in morning prayers led by Archbishop Tutu, and then hopefully to actually meet him and talk to him briefly! We can’t wait to have the whole group with us here in this amazing land, chris smith, teacher of the trip
